Long before I ever set foot in China, I felt an inexplicable connection to it. When I finally arrived, that feeling became certainty almost immediately. Within minutes, I had the strange sense that I was exactly where I was supposed to be. Even today, I cannot fully explain why. It was never about one city, one landscape, or one particular experience. It was something more instinctive, a feeling of familiarity in a place I had never felt before.
What made China so special to me was not any single aspect of the country, but the combination of so many things I was drawn to. There are beautiful landscapes all over the world. There are places known for their food, their people, or their culture. But very few countries have ever inspired me across so many dimensions at once. In China, it was everything together. It seemed that wherever my curiosity led me, there was something waiting to capture my attention.
Looking back, I think China fulfilled many things I was searching for before I even knew I was searching for them. The country constantly surprised me, challenged me, and inspired me. The more I explored, the more I realized that it was impossible to reduce it to a single idea or experience. Perhaps that was exactly what resonated with me most. China never asked me to choose one perspective. It made room for complexity, contradiction, and discovery, and somewhere within all of that, I found a place that felt remarkably familiar.
I eventually spent almost ten years there. And even now, whenever I hear the language spoken somewhere in the world, share a familiar meal, or meet someone who calls China home, I feel connected to a place that never really left me.
This collection of places across China is my way of expressing my gratitude and admiration for its incredible diversity.
